2014 Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive Arrives Next Year – 2013 New York

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive is set to arrive in the U.S. next year, making it the automaker’s first EV to be offered on our shores. The electrified vehicle makes its official public debut at this week’s New York auto show, with all the key details regarding its zero-emissions powertrain.
The electric Benz will be the second vehicle to come from the automaker’s front-drive MFA-platform, the first being the 2014 Mercedes CLA250. The motor powering the B-Class Electric Drive is rated at 134 hp and 228 lb-ft. The automaker says top speed is limited to 100 mph and that acceleration will be “decidedly brisk” with a 0-60 mph time of “less than 10 seconds.” We’ll assume it’s somewhere in the nine-second range. Mercedes estimates the B-Class Electric Drive will travel up to 115 miles per charge during most ideal driving situations, which likely includes a mix of city driving to take advantage of regenerative braking. Replenishing 60 miles of range will take about two hours when using a level 2 charger. A standard 110-volt power source will also work, albeit with longer charge times.
Its lithium-ion battery is stored under the floor in what Benz calls the “Energy Space.” Drivers can monitor the battery via the dash-mounted 5.8-inch color screen, which will also provide info on local charging stations. The driver can also access this info (and pre-heat or cool the cabin) remotely via their computer or smartphone.
The B-Class Electric Drive will look identical to and will offer the same amenities as its gas- and diesel-powered counterparts, which launched in other markets over a year ago (for now the U.S. will only get the EV variant). A forward collision avoidance system is standard, and items like navigation, blind spot monitoring, Lane Keeping Assist, and Active Park Assist are optional. Despite the addition of the battery, Mercedes says cargo and passenger volume are unaffected. Look for full details on standard and optional features, as well as pricing closer to its launch.
