One could cost as little as $30,000
At yesterday's unveiling of the SP:01, Detroit Electric revealed plans to launch two new models in 2014.
Little is known about the cars but CEO Albert Lam said they will be a sedan and hatchback. One is expected to cost $30,000 to $35,000 and both are slated to have a "Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment" system as well as short- and long-range battery packs.
Like the SP:01, the cars will borrow a number of components from a mainstream automaker. There's no word on who the company is working with, but Autoblog says an announcement could be made at the Shanghai Motor Show.
As we reported yesterday, the SP:01 is a rebadged Lotus Exige that has been outfitted with a 37 kWh battery and an electric motor that develops 201 bhp (150 kW) and 166 lb-ft (225 Nm) of torque. This enables the 2,354 lbs (1,067 kg) car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, hit a top speed of 249 km/h (155 mph) and travel up to 190 miles (306 km) on a single charge.
