Debuting at Auto Shanghai later this month
Spy photos with the Mercedes-Benz E400L Hybrid have surfaced the web ahead of the car's unveiling later this month at 2013 Auto Shanghai.
It will represent the most powerful China-made Mercedes-Benz model and at the same time the first hybrid produced in China by the brand. Under the hood it will get a V6 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine rated at 333 bhp (248 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque, linked to an electric motor.
Even though rivals like BMW and Audi have announced plans of producing hybrids in China, Mercedes-Benz will be the first German marque to launch such a model. However, the company is taking a big risk as the market for hybrids in China is quite small since customers there consider hybrids too expensive.
While China will get the hybridized version based on the long wheelbase E-Class, in United States the E400 Hybrid is based on the standard body E-Class and costs from 55,800 USD.
