A huge number of new cars bombarded the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center this week in the Big Apple, where we feasted our eyes on track monsters like the Jaguar XKR-S GT, and Camaro Z/28. If practical cars are more your thing, then perhaps the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid or refreshed Kia Soul called to you. Which New York debut one was your favorite? Below is a refresher on some of the new sheetmetal that was on display.
Toyota Highlander: Although the 2014 Highlander is mostly identical to the 2013 version under the hood, it wears a completely new outfit. Every surface looks to be reworked, giving the Highlander a stronger, more commanding look with a new chiseled nose, lower roofline, large grille, wraparound headlights, and sculpted wheel wells. A six-speed automatic transmission to the 3.5-liter V-6 model replaces the old five-speed unit.
Volvo V60 R-Design: More wagons, please! Volvo answered many enthusiasts’ prayers by bringing stateside a wagon based off the sexy S60 sedan. Especially in R-Design guise, the V60 makes us anxious for its arrival.
Cadillac CTS: The big news here is Cadillac’s most powerful V-6 ever in a new Vsport model: a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 rated at 420 hp and 430 lb-ft. Paired to a new eight-speed automatic, the Vsport should be good for 0-60 times in the 4.6-second range, with stops from 60 taking fewer than 130 feet.
Jeep Cherokee: With a face only a mother could love, the Jeep Cherokee makes up for its polarizing appearance with its driving dynamics. To quiet critics, the CUV offers three distinct off-road systems, two of which feature a low range; a smoother ride, better aerodynamics, and significantly improved fuel economy. In other words, don’t knock it until you try it.
Subaru WRX Concept: No longer a part of the Impreza line, the WRX now does its own thing with styling influenced by the Nissan GT-R. Lower, longer, sleeker, and wider, the concept is a four-door with a coupe-like profile. The new WR Blue Pearl III paint color combined with the fluorescent yellow brake calipers peeking out from behind the BBS wheels simply make this concept hard to dislike.
Chevrolet Camaro Z/28: Welcome back, Z/28! After being absent from the fifth-gen Camaro at its original launch, the Z/28 is back with a vengeance. Motivated by the outgoing Corvette Z06′s naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V-8, the Z/28 is expected to put down least 500 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser said it’s “the fastest road-racing Camaro possible that’s still street-legal.”
The refreshed Scion tC coupe also showed up wearing a new front grille that looks like the FR-S, but one staffer saw a resemblance to the Toyota Avalon. The Kia Forte Koup and Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid also debuted, while the Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 crossover hybrids were also unveiled, along with the refreshed Dodge Durango, new Acura MDX, updated Honda Odyssey, and refreshed Hyundai Equus. From Jaguar/Land Rover, we got our first glimpse of the new Range Rover Sport, Jaguar XJR, and Jaguar XKR-S GT. From GM, the Camaro Z/28 and Cadillac CTS were joined by the Buick Regal and Buick LaCrosse.
So what was your favorite 2013 New York auto show debut?
